Apple is reportedly testing the use of a color display from E Ink as an external screen for an unannounced foldable device, according to noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. “The color EPD [Electronic Paper Display] has the potential to become a mainstream solution for foldable devices’ must-have cover/second screen thanks to its excellent power-saving,” the analyst wrote in a tweet. He adds that the E Ink display is also being tested in “tablet-like applications.”

There has been no dearth of smart clock hacks featuring E Ink displays and here is another from mattwach which has an interesting take on the concept thanks to its wooden build. As Hackaday revealed, making up the core of the clock is the Atmega328p microchip that runs off a 32.768 KHz clock crystal. This allows for the twin advantages of precise timekeeping while also ensuring the drain on the battery is just the minimum. Then there is also a GPS module on board that allows the clock to sync with the satellite time. This ensures the most accurate time is shown at all times. That said, GPS usage is kept to just the bare minimum and is switched on only when needed. This is done to save about 30-100 mA that the module needs for its operation. The small Waveshare display looks quite sharp as well.

Amazon released the 14.3 firmware update a couple of weeks ago and pulled it within a day, before too many Kindles downloaded and installed it. This is primarily due to a large number of bugs. The update had an adverse effect on battery life, making Kindles run of juice within a couple of days, instead of weeks. There were also widespread problems with opening books and reading them. Some worked, some didn’t, there really wasn’t a rhyme or reason that anyone could identify. One of the biggest problem was book cover art not displaying properly. Amazon solved these issues and just released a new update, version 5.14.3.0.1.

Digital Signage Today

By Kevin Damask

May 17, 2022

Remote workspaces, hybrid offices, virtual meetings. The office environment has changed dramatically in recent years, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. But what will the future hold for the workplace? What can companies do to transform their office to retain quality staff members and recruit new employees? Gary Kayye believes it's about creating an experience. Kayye, the managing director of The Rave Agency, was the keynote speaker at the E4 Experience conference hosted by Exertis Almo May 3 in Chicago. Kayye founded the Rave Agency, a media company that follows the AV and digital signage industry, in 1999. Along with a background in public speaking, Kayye has been teaching advertising and marketing classes at the University of North Carolina for more than 13 years. Kayye's E4 Experience presentation, "The Future of Workspaces Is All About Experience," highlighted some of the advantages and challenges of current workplace models. But he focused much of his talk on how to connect with younger employees, especially those who've spent most of their lives consumed by screens and digital technology.

Subscriptions to Sustainability: Leadership: A Q&A With Ahold Delhaize CEO Frans Muller

Winsight Grocery Business

By Diane Adam

May 16, 2022

Christine LaFave Grace: It’s a slightly different environment in the US versus Europe why is it so important to Ahold Delhaize to take a leadership position on sustainability and to get out in front of other players in the grocery industry especially in the US versus just running alongside them or just keeping up with regulations? Frans Muller: That is a strategically important question, but also a question where you hit with me with both the heart and mind. I believe that in the grocery food that is healthy and affordable is the best medicine for people. This is great purpose for a company to be proud of and to take responsibility to make a better planet and better space to live for people …  Another opportunity with digitalization is electronic shelf label that we have in Europe, which can help people reduce food waste by offering offers on food that is nearing its shelf life. There are also a lot of algorithms which are forecasting many things and when we can forecast sales much better on category levels that allows us to avoid unsold food and therefore avoid food waste and ultimately CO2. There are many applications for digitalization on the customer, vendor and forecasting level.
