TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — E Ink Chair Li Cheng-hao (李政昊) said Thursday the company is considering expanding US production amid US President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Speaking at Touch Taiwan in Taipei, Li said its e-paper materials are produced in Taiwan and the US, while only modules are made in China, per CNA. He admitted that rising tariffs will likely raise US e-paper prices but may also accelerate adoption in the retail sector.

Li explained that retailers prefer more paper-like displays. E Ink is investing in new production lines to deliver larger, more cost-effective e-paper displays to meet this demand.

He said e-paper screens could support video playback within three years, offering more dynamic visual capabilities while maintaining power efficiency. Indoor e-paper displays typically require only a single battery, compared to 32 for LCDs, and up to 120 for outdoor versions.

CINNO research analyst Zhou Hua (周華) said e-paper uses several technologies, including microcapsule electrophoresis and electrowetting. These innovations have driven the evolution and diversification of the e-paper sector, he added.

According to Zhou, e-paper gained traction between 2008 and 2011 before slowing during the tablet boom from 2012 to 2015. Since 2017, the retail label segment has seen double-digit growth each year, marking a strong comeback for the technology.
