01 BMW Launches Color-shifting i5 Flow Nostokana

At the Frieze Art Fair in Los Angeles, BMW used ePaper technology to create a dynamic art installation featuring the work of South African artist Esther Mahlangu, on the 2024 BMW i5 Flow Nostokana. This creative inspiration comes from the 1991 BMW E34 525i art car.

This new art car represents the latest advancement of E Ink technology in the automotive field. When BMW started using E Ink screens on the car body in 2022, it could only realize black and white color switching. Last year, the BMW i Vision Dee concept car showcased that BMW models can display up to 32 colors.

The latest i5 Flow Nostokana is equipped with 1349 carefully cut and controlled E Ink sheets that can change the color variation and dynamic effects of the car body, demonstrating BMW's ability to create complex shapes and patterns. BMW stated that while the i5 Flow Nostokana will always be a unique model, the E Ink sheets it uses are very durable and may be applied to mass-produced models in the future.
