BMW and E Ink have maintained a multi-year partnership in automotive ePaper displays. Following the debut of the production BMW iX3 Flow Edition — equipped with an ePaper hood — at the Beijing International Auto Show earlier this year, the two companies jointly exhibited the "BMW Color-Changing ePaper Concept Car" at Computex 2026.
The concept car uses the latest E Ink Prism™ color formable ePaper material. Through stretching and thermoplastic processes, the technology breaks free from flat-surface constraints, allowing ePaper to conform seamlessly to 3D curved surfaces such as the car body and wheel rims, while enabling dynamic color transitions through programmatic control.
This breakthrough signals that ePaper technology has officially moved from conceptual demonstration to practical application. Once primarily associated with e-readers, ePaper is now entering automotive exterior design for the first time, giving vehicle bodies dynamic visual and color-changing capabilities.
E Ink noted that the biggest challenges for applying ePaper to vehicle bodies are curved structures, outdoor environments, and the automotive industry's rigorous durability standards. The successful validation of the BMW iX3 Flow Edition marks a significant milestone in ePaper's entry into the automotive market.
The standout feature of the BMW iX3 Flow Edition is the integration of E Ink Prism ePaper into the hood and body surfaces, enabling eight distinct animations and visual effects. Owners can freely switch the vehicle's appearance to match their mood, outfit, or occasion.
This collaboration marks the beginning of a programmable era in automotive exterior design and opens new directions for smart surface interaction.
E Ink also unveiled a complete ePaper display solution for electric buses, including: E Ink Prism™ mobile advertising panels and rear turn-signal warning systems for bus exteriors; a 7.3" E Ink Spectra™ double-sided hanging strap advertisement display; a 25.3" E Ink Kaleido3™ interactive bus route map; and mid-to-large-format E Ink Spectra™ in-vehicle ePaper advertising signage.
